SONAR TRANSDUCERS
:: Application Examples
MSI's acoustic transducers are used in both defense and commercial sonar systems, especially for applications that require high bandwidth and closely controlled beam patterns, such as acoustic communications and undersea surveying and imaging. Our piezocomposite arrays can be curved to match the hull contour, allowing them to be faired to the surface or attached in a low profile configuration. Alternatively, MSI's arrays can be configured as stand-alone overmolded units, fully tested and ready to be attached to your specified mechanical fixture and electrical connector.
MSI's pioneering development of low cost injection molding for manufacturing piezocomposite opened the way for application of this powerful acoustic transducer material in sonar. MSI has become the recognized leader in providing high performance piezocomposite transducers for the US Navy and a variety of other defense and commercial applications. MSI transducers are used in weapons sonar, mine hunting sonar, bottom mapping sonar, obstacle avoidance sonar and acoustic communications systems.
These examples illustrate some of MSI's sonar array capabilities:
Hydrographic Survey Sonar:
MSI designed and manufactures the unique curved array used by Atlas Hydrographic in its FS30C Fansweep survey sonar system. This sophisticated commerical sonar system has raised performance standards for hydrographic survey sonar worldwide.
Calibration Hydrophones:
MSI's injection molded piezocomposite is the transducer technology chosen by the U.S. Navy for its FS-82 calibration hydrophones, widely used around the world for over a decade to calibrate sonar test facilities to U.S. Navy standards.
Forward-looking Sonar:
When Farsounder needed an affordable transmit/receive array for its forward-looking FS-3 3D obstacle-avoidance sonar, MSI's injection molded piezocomposite array helped Farsounder to open up this new market segment and meet demand.
Acoustic Communications Sonar:
MSI's broadband piezocomposite acoustic modem transducers have been operating for almost a decade in KDD's cable-tracking UUV's.
Side-scan Sonar:
Teledyne-Benthos turned to MSI when they needed to upgrade and outsource side-scan sonar arrays for their sophisticated C3D AUV sonar.
Mine Hunting Sonar:
When the Royal Australian Navy needed an advanced mine hunting sonar capability, Australia's Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) selected MSI's injection molded piezocomposite arrays. MSI is now developing in-stride mine avoidance sonar for U.S. Navy ships, including DDG-1000.
Mine Neutralization Sonar:
BAE Systems selected MSI to produce the nose assembly for the Archerfish mine neutralization vehicle, now used in the U.S. Navy Airborne Mine Neutralization System. This assembly includes piezocomposite sonar arrays and optical sensor windows.
